Cognitive Functions
The 8 Jungian cognitive functions that underlie MBTI types
Cognitive Functions
The 16 MBTI types are built on a foundation of 8 cognitive functionsβmental processes described by Carl Jung. Understanding them unlocks a deeper layer of personality.
The 8 Functions
Perceiving Functions (How we gather information)
| Function | Full Name | Description | | -------- | --------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | | Ni | Introverted Intuition | Sees patterns, foresees outcomes, convergent thinking | | Ne | Extraverted Intuition | Explores possibilities, brainstorms, divergent thinking | | Si | Introverted Sensing | Remembers details, values tradition, personal experience | | Se | Extraverted Sensing | Lives in the moment, physical awareness, action-oriented |
Judging Functions (How we make decisions)
| Function | Full Name | Description | | -------- | -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | | Ti | Introverted Thinking | Seeks logical consistency, analyzes systems, precision | | Te | Extraverted Thinking | Organizes efficiently, implements plans, external logic | | Fi | Introverted Feeling | Values authenticity, personal ethics, deep emotions | | Fe | Extraverted Feeling | Seeks harmony, reads social cues, group values |
The Function Stack
Every MBTI type has a stack of all 8 functions in a specific order:
- Dominant (1st): Your core strength, used most naturally
- Auxiliary (2nd): Supports the dominant, balances it
- Tertiary (3rd): Developing in adulthood, playful but unreliable
- Inferior (4th): Your weakness, but also growth area
Example: INTJ
- Ni (Dominant) β Powerful pattern recognition
- Te (Auxiliary) β Efficient execution
- Fi (Tertiary) β Emerging personal values
- Se (Inferior) β Struggles with present-moment awareness
Shadow Functions (5th-8th)
The remaining 4 functions form your shadowβused under stress or unconsciously:
- Opposing (5th): Blocks others, defensive
- Critical Parent (6th): Self-critical, harsh judge
- Trickster (7th): Deceives self and others
- Demon (8th): Destructive when triggered
How EQVector Uses This
Our assessment measures your actual function usage, not just your type label. This means:
- Two INTJs can have different Ni/Te balances
- Your function scores show development levels
- The AI Coach adapts advice to your specific stack
